North Rocks Home Addition
The Challenge
This was originally a three to four bedroom, split level home with a carport, covered deck and rumpus which appears to have had the original garage converted to a rumpus or fourth bedroom and storage area.
This growing young family – parents Libby and Tom and their five kids – was starting to get “a little claustrophobic”, so they were looking for additional space to enable the entire family to sleep upstairs, while downstairs retains two spare bedrooms.
Addbuild's Response
Addbuild’s design is large yet surprisingly practical and consists of the addition of four bedrooms (all of which can be fitted with a built-in wardrobe), a shower room with a separate toilet and vanity, and a large living area.
This design is also well thought out so that it can cater for any future additions to the family!
Key architectural design elements of the existing home were continued through to the new addition, for example the style and slope of the roof as well as window sizes.
This gives the impression that the house as it is now was always intended to be built that way, and aesthetically this makes the home flow together well rather than appearing to be an afterthought.
To keep costs down, the measured variations to the ground floor improve the overall practicality of the design while the use of lightweight construction has been instrumental in achieving a low overall cost without compromising features and finishes.
The overall design also made use of the existing external walls to reduce the need for additional structural support being required, again keeping cost to a minimum.
The positioning of the stairs for access to the first floor is directly opposite the entry to the home, ensuring minimal disturbance to the rest of the house when access is required.
The configuration of the stairs allows for the original bathroom to contribute to the open plan feel of the ground floor living areas with a storage area also included below the stairs.
A former bedroom has been converted to a new bathroom with a linen cupboard which makes practical use of all the space.
